Welcome to Moonah Links, the host venue of the 2003 and 2005 Australian Open Golf Championship. Moonah Links will again take centre stage in the world golf arena when we host the ‘Moonah Classic’ from 21-24 February 2008.
To be staged on the Open Course, the Moonah Classic is a joint venture partnership between the PGA Tour of Australasia (now part of a newly merged company known as the PGA of Australia) and the Handbury Group. The event is co-sanctioned by the US Nationwide Tour and will be one of the largest prize pools ever offered on the Nationwide Tour – AUD850,000.00.
This tournament will be sanctioned and appear on the Order of Merit and schedule of the PGA Tour of Australasia and Nationwide Tour. The Nationwide Tour is the secondary series on the lucrative US PGA circuit and provides a unique opportunity for Australian players to test their skills against international players. This is the only event on Australian soil that conducts this sanctioning with the Nationwide Tour.
The third event on the 2008 Nationwide Tour schedule, the Moonah Classic consolidates the strong US Tour relationship and player pathway that has developed between the tours over the past five years and is part of a two event ‘down under swing’ following the HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship which will be held at Peppers Clearwater Resort, Christchurch, New Zealand.
The ‘Open Course’ at Moonah Links was designed by Peter Thomson, five times British Open Champion specifically to host major tournaments. A natural stadium layout with wide undulating fairways of pure couch grass, punctuated with pot bunkers leading onto large multi-tiered greens makes this course one of Australia’s finest links courses and a fitting location for the 2008 Moonah Classic. As a purpose built ‘stadium’ course it offers unsurpassed vantage points for spectator viewing.
